Teeball practice, in the off-season

  • Shreveport Sci-port Museum

My son finished his last teeball game for the year in late May that I wrote about here.  He also finished going to school, pre-K, as well.

Summer vacation started for him and I’ve had to add new events to keep him busy this summer.  Some children tend to forget everything they learned the past year, aka brain dump, and I don’t want to see that happen.  Plus with the weather reaching over 100s some changes to his outdoor activities had to be made.

Swimming

I take my son swimming to the local pool.  My son’s still learning to swim but playing in the swimming pool burns energy that children seem to have an endless supply of.  Sign them up for a swimming lesson or teach them yourself if can swim.  The earlier you enroll children in swimming the better.  Click here for an article I wrote about swimming lessons he took several months ago.

Zoo

I take my son to the zoo every few weeks. My son learns every time we visit, where the animals are located.  When they’re sleeping, and Thomas can’t find them, he asks where’s the lion, tiger, or bear?

I started taking my son to zoos before he could even walk.  He may not completely understood what he saw, but his mind begins to work at this early age.  My son has been to the Philadelphia Zoo, Portland Zoo, Fort Worth Zoo, Waco Zoo, and many others.  He is very familiar with animals look like because he expose him to these fascinating animals.

Science museum

When my wife and I plan it, we take our son to the Shreveport science museum.  This is a great location that my son could spend hours here playing with the child friendly displays.

Playground

There are a few playgrounds near my home and that are only a few minutes away.  Playgrounds are a great place for children to burn some energy.

Playgrounds are unused  resources that are around our neighborhoods.  They’re free and children can spend hours here.  Just make sure you bring a snack and drinks for them so they can replenish their energy.

Reading books

Lastly we continue to read to him daily.  I bought a four shelf bookcase last month since the little box was overwhelmed by the books my son has.  Don’t forget to check out the reading challenge that is also going on this summer that’s located here.

Children are like sponges and will absorb whatever they’re exposed to.  Expose children to many things rather than sitting in front of television for hour upon hour.  I gave you a few here, what other things do you take your child to in the summer months?

Have a great week.

Take care,

Cal
